Skin whitening cream in Pakistan: what is really in them
This is the largest skincare search in Pakistan and the one where the honest answer sells the least. No cosmetic safely changes your natural skin colour. What can be changed is unevenness — dark patches, post-acne marks, melasma and sun damage — and the ingredients that do it work slowly. The creams that appear to work in a week generally contain something that is not on the label, and this page sets out what that usually is.
Elluvi does not make a whitening cream and does not use the word. What we make is a vitamin C serum for the appearance of dark spots and dullness, which is a slower and smaller claim.

Whitening and brightening are different claims
Brightening means improving evenness and light reflection — fading dark patches so the overall tone reads more uniform. Whitening implies lowering your baseline melanin, which no safe cosmetic does and which is not what most people actually want when they look in a mirror.
The distinction matters commercially because a product that genuinely evens tone over three months and a product that bleaches skin in a week sit on the same shelf under the same word.
What the fast-acting creams contain
Three ingredient classes recur in unlabelled creams in this market: topical steroids, hydroquinone above regulated strength, and mercury compounds. All three lighten skin quickly and all three cause serious, sometimes permanent harm.
Mercury is the worst of them because it accumulates and affects the kidneys and nervous system, and because it is genuinely present in a share of the unlabelled creams tested in this region. It is not a theoretical risk.
What steroid damage looks like
Skin that clears for a few weeks, then redness, visible capillaries, thinning, acne induced by the steroid itself, increased hair growth on the face, and a rebound flare every time the cream is stopped.
The rebound is what traps people. Stopping produces a flare worse than the original problem, so the cream goes back on. Breaking that cycle needs a dermatologist and takes months, and it is one of the most common presentations in Pakistani dermatology clinics.
The one reliable tell
Speed. Genuine tone change from a regulated cosmetic active takes eight to twelve weeks. Anything visibly lighter in seven days is doing something that is not described on the pack.
The supporting tells are structural: no full INCI list, no batch number, no manufacture or expiry date, no manufacturer address, and sale through informal channels rather than a registered retailer.
| What is in it | How fast it shows | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Topical steroid, undeclared | Days to two weeks | Thinning, visible capillaries, steroid acne, facial hair, and a rebound flare every time it is stopped. Stopping abruptly after months needs a dermatologist |
| Mercury compounds, undeclared | Two to four weeks | Kidney and neurological harm. Published testing of products marketed in Pakistan has found mercury well beyond permitted limits, and the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority has suspended the licences of several widely sold beauty creams over safety violations including mercury |
| Hydroquinone above regulated strength | Four to eight weeks | Testing has found levels above what FDA and PSQCA standards permit. At controlled strength it is a legitimate prescription option, which is where it belongs |
| Vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, retinoids | Eight to twelve weeks | Nothing, beyond patience and daily sunscreen. This is what a regulated active looks like |
What actually evens skin tone
Sunscreen first and by a wide margin. Then a brightening active — vitamin C, alpha arbutin, niacinamide, azelaic acid or a retinoid. Then eight to twelve weeks of daily use.
Sunscreen is not a supporting step here, it is the main one. Every unprotected day of Pakistani sun darkens the marks you are treating, which is why brightening routines without it run on the spot for years.
Which pigmentation responds and which does not
Post-acne marks and general sun-driven unevenness respond well. Melasma responds partially and recurs with sun and hormonal triggers. Deep dermal pigmentation and true scarring do not respond to topicals at all.
Knowing which one you have prevents years of buying the wrong thing. If a patch has been unchanged since childhood, or has a raised or dented texture, no cream is the answer for it.
What Elluvi sells, and what it does not claim
Vitamin C Serum, Rs. 1,299 for 30 ml at 10% ascorbic acid. Hydra Glow Cream, Rs. 1,449 for 50 ml with 0.3% retinol, 5% niacinamide and 2% alpha arbutin. Brightening Face Wash, Rs. 849 for 120 ml. The Pigmentation Bundle is Rs. 2,878 for all three.
None of these will make you fairer than you are, and nothing on the pack says they will. They are formulated to fade marks and even tone over eight to twelve weeks alongside daily sunscreen, which is the only thing this category can honestly promise.
If you are already using one
Do not stop an unlabelled cream abruptly if you have used it for months — the rebound can be severe. See a dermatologist, who will taper it and manage the flare.
Apply a small amount to a discreet area of the jawline once daily for 2–3 days. Stop if persistent redness, itching or irritation occurs.
