Sunscreen for pigmentation in Pakistan: what to look for on the label
Sunscreen is the step that decides whether every other pigmentation product works. It is also the step most people get wrong, because the number printed largest on the bottle is not the one that matters most for pigmentation. Elluvi does not sell a sunscreen, so this page has nothing to sell you. It exists because without this step the rest of our range underperforms.

SPF measures protection against UVB, the wavelength that burns. Pigmentation is driven far more by UVA, which is measured by the PA rating or a broad-spectrum claim. An SPF 50 with no UVA protection is close to useless for dark spots.
Look for PA+++ or PA++++, or an explicit broad-spectrum statement. This is the single most common mistake in this category, and it is easy to make because SPF is printed in large type and the PA rating is usually not.
Visible light matters for melasma
Melasma on brown skin is triggered by visible light as well as UV, and no clear sunscreen blocks visible light. A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides does.
This is why people with melasma protect diligently, stay out of the sun, and still see the patch persist. If your pigmentation is a symmetrical patch across the cheeks or upper lip, a tinted formula is not a cosmetic preference, it is part of the treatment.
Heat is a separate trigger
Melasma also responds to heat, independently of light. In Pakistani summers that matters, and it explains why pigmentation worsens in June even when someone has been careful about sun.
There is no product answer to this. Shade, timing your outdoor errands, and keeping your face cool do more than switching sunscreen again. It is worth knowing so you do not blame a product that was working.
Almost everyone applies too little
The tested amount is roughly a quarter teaspoon for the face, which is far more than most people use. At half that, an SPF 50 performs closer to an SPF 15.
The practical fix is the two-finger method: squeeze a line of sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers, and use all of it on face and neck. If that feels like too much product, the texture is wrong for you and a different formula will get worn properly.
Reapplication, realistically
Protection degrades over a few hours and sweat removes it faster. Reapplying at midday matters if you are outdoors, and matters little if you are indoors away from windows all day.
Perfect reapplication is not achievable for most people and chasing it is how the habit gets abandoned entirely. A sunscreen you apply properly every morning and never reapply still beats an ideal routine you keep for a fortnight.
Chemical or mineral makes little difference here
Both protect well if the UVA rating is good. Mineral formulas with zinc oxide suit reactive skin and often leave a cast on deeper skin tones. Chemical formulas are lighter and more comfortable in heat.
The white cast problem is the main reason sunscreen habits fail in this market. A tinted mineral formula, or a modern chemical one, solves it. The best sunscreen is genuinely the one you will put on every morning without resenting it.
How it fits with vitamin C and retinol
Vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen: the two work together, since vitamin C handles some of the damage that gets through. Retinol at night only, because it increases sun sensitivity.
Using a retinoid without daily sunscreen is the most self-defeating combination in pigmentation care. You accelerate turnover of the skin while leaving it more vulnerable to the thing causing the pigment in the first place.
Why we do not sell one
We have not formulated a sunscreen, and recommending our own would be the only reason to write this page differently. Sunscreen is not currently sold by Elluvi. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher from a trusted brand.
Buy whichever broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher you will actually wear daily, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list. The habit matters more than the brand, and by a wide margin.
