Elluvi

Skincare routine for acne-prone skin in Pakistan

Acne-prone skin gets sold the most products and needs the fewest. The routine that works is short, gentle and repeated for eight to twelve weeks — long enough for a skin cell cycle to turn over more than once. This page sets out that routine, names the products and habits that reliably make acne worse in this market, and is explicit about the point at which topicals stop being the answer.

The routine, morning and night

Morning: gentle cleanse, niacinamide serum, light moisturiser, sunscreen. Night: gentle cleanse, treatment, moisturiser. No scrubs, no astringent toner, no more than one new product at a time.

Everything about an acne routine should be boring. The variable that decides the outcome is whether the same four steps happen every day for three months, not which brand is on the bottle.

Why gentle beats strong

Acne-prone skin has a compromised barrier already. Harsh cleansing, scrubbing and layering acids increases inflammation, and inflammation is a driver of acne rather than a side effect of treating it.

Anything that produces stinging, peeling or persistent redness is setting the routine back. This is the opposite of the intuition the category sells — that visible harshness means the product is working.

The actives worth using, and what each one does

Niacinamide reduces sebum output and calms inflammation. Salicylic acid clears the pore lining and suits blackheads and closed comedones. Benzoyl peroxide reduces the bacteria involved in inflamed acne. Retinoids normalise how the pore sheds cells and are the strongest topical of the four.

You do not need all four. Most people do well on niacinamide daily plus one exfoliating or retinoid step a few nights a week. Elluvi does not sell a salicylic acid product or benzoyl peroxide, and both are widely available in Pakistani pharmacies at low cost.

Marks are not scars, and they are treated differently

The flat brown or red patch left behind after a spot is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it fades with sunscreen, time and a brightening active. A true scar is a change in the skin's texture and does not respond to any cream.

Most of what people in Pakistan call acne scars are marks, which is good news — they fade. The single fastest way to make them fade slower is skipping sunscreen, because UV darkens them daily.

What makes acne worse in this market specifically

Unlabelled fairness and medicated creams containing steroids, sharing a face towel, picking, and switching product every two weeks before anything has had time to work.

Steroid creams clear skin in a week and then produce steroid-induced acne, rebound breakouts and thinned skin when stopped. If a cream has no full INCI list, no batch number and is sold on speed, that is the category — and it is genuinely common on Pakistani shelves.

How long to give it

Eight to twelve weeks before judging a routine. A skin cell cycle is roughly four weeks, and a topical needs several cycles to show its effect. Changing products at week two guarantees you never find out what works.

Take a photograph in the same light on day one. Memory is unreliable about slow change, and the four-week photo is usually more encouraging than the daily mirror.

What this routine costs

Brightening Face Wash Rs. 849 for 100 ml with 5% glycolic acid and 5% niacinamide, Hydra Glow Serum Rs. 1,149 for 30 ml with 10% niacinamide and 1% zinc PCA, Hydrating Moisturiser Rs. 1,249 for 120 ml. Around Rs. 3,247 total, plus sunscreen.

On acne-prone skin start the glycolic wash once daily in the evening rather than twice a day, and add the serum a week later so that if something disagrees with you it is obvious which product it was.

When to see a dermatologist instead

Painful deep cysts, nodules, acne that is scarring, or acne that has not improved after three months of a consistent routine. Oral treatment exists for exactly this and no cosmetic product substitutes for it.

Apply a small amount to a discreet area of the jawline once daily for 2–3 days. Stop if persistent redness, itching or irritation occurs.
