The three causes of dullness
A build-up of dead cells on the surface, which scatters light. Dehydration, which flattens the surface so it reflects less. And UV damage and pigmentation, which change the colour rather than the finish.
They need different fixes: a gentle chemical exfoliant, hydration and barrier repair, and sunscreen with a brightening active respectively. Buying an exfoliating scrub for all three is why people scrub twice a week for a year with no change.
Why a scrub is the wrong tool
Physical scrubs with hard particles create micro-tears, irritate the barrier and deliver a smoothness that lasts about a day. Chemical exfoliants dissolve the bonds between dead cells more evenly and with less damage.
This is one of the few places where the gentler option is also the more effective one. A 5% glycolic wash used a few times a week does more for brightness over a month than a walnut scrub does in six.
Which cleanser ingredients change brightness
Glycolic acid, at around 5% in a rinse-off wash, loosens dead surface cells. Lactic acid does the same more gently. Niacinamide supports tone and barrier. Everything described as brightening without one of these is describing a temporary finish.
Note that "brightening" and "whitening" are not the same claim, though the market blurs them constantly here. Brightening means light reflection and evenness. Whitening implies changing your skin colour, which no cosmetic legally or safely does.
Dehydration is the fastest-moving cause
Of the three, dehydration is the one that changes in days. A stripped, dehydrated surface looks flat and grey regardless of how much you exfoliate. Softening the cleanser and adding a humectant plus a light moisturiser usually shows within a week.
The tell is that skin looks better in the first minutes after a shower and worse by afternoon. That is water leaving faster than it arrives, and no exfoliation step will fix it.
The part a face wash cannot fix
Pigmentation and photoageing are a colour change in the skin, not a layer on top of it. Those need a leave-on antioxidant, a brightening active and daily sunscreen — a rinse-off cleanser cannot deliver enough of anything to change them.
This is worth being blunt about because the whitening face wash category in Pakistan is built on the opposite claim. A wash is on your face for forty seconds; a serum is on it for eight hours.
How often to use an exfoliating wash
Start once daily in the evening on oily and normal skin, or two to three evenings a week on dry and sensitive skin. Build only if skin stays comfortable. More frequency does not equal more brightness.
Over-exfoliation looks like brightness for the first week and like redness, stinging and shininess after that. If a new product suddenly stings when it never used to, you are exfoliating too often.
