Serum for acne scars in Pakistan: the distinction that decides everything

Most of what gets called an acne scar in Pakistan is a mark — flat, brown or purple pigment left where a spot healed, which fades over months and responds well to a serum. A true scar is a change in texture: a dent, a pit, or a raised ridge. No serum reaches the second kind. Working out which you have before you buy is the difference between three months well spent and three months wasted.

Mark or scar — the test

Look at the area under side lighting rather than straight on, and run a fingertip over it. Flat and only discoloured is a mark, and it fades. A dent, a pit or a raised ridge is a scar, and it needs a clinic — microneedling, subcision, laser or a peel done by someone qualified.

Both can sit in the same area, which is why people conclude a serum did nothing: the pigment lifted and the texture stayed, so the face looks changed in photographs and unchanged in the mirror. Photograph the same cheek in the same light every fortnight and the two components separate visibly.

What a serum does to a mark

Vitamin C addresses existing pigment and gives daytime antioxidant cover. Niacinamide limits pigment being transferred into new skin cells. Alpha arbutin interrupts pigment production. A retinoid speeds turnover so the marked cells shed sooner. Sunscreen keeps the mark from being re-darkened daily.

Which serum to start with

If spots are still appearing, start with niacinamide with zinc — treating marks while new ones form is filling a leaking bucket. If the skin is clear and the marks are what is left, a vitamin C serum each morning is the single most useful product.

Add a second active only after four weeks on the first, and never start both in the same week. When something stings, you need to know which bottle did it.

How long, honestly

Marks from the last few months: six to twelve weeks. Marks a year or more old: three to six months, and some never fully clear. Deeper skin tones hold post-inflammatory pigment longer, so the slower end of every range is the realistic one in Pakistan.

What makes marks last longer

Picking, scrubs, unlabelled mix creams, and sun exposure without protection. Each re-inflames skin that is trying to resolve, and inflammation is how the pigment got there.

There is one more, less obvious: stacking actives. A barrier pushed into flaking and stinging by four products at once is inflamed skin, and inflamed skin in Fitzpatrick IV–V makes more pigment. Fewer products, used longer, clears marks faster than an aggressive routine abandoned every three weeks.

FAQs

For marks — flat discolouration — a vitamin C serum in the morning, or niacinamide with zinc if spots are still appearing. Elluvi's Vitamin C Serum is ascorbic acid 10% at Rs. 1,299 and the Hydra Glow Serum is niacinamide 10% with zinc PCA 1% at Rs. 1,149. For pitted or raised scars, no serum works and a clinic is the honest answer.
