Face gets oily by afternoon: why it happens and what keeps it down

Reviewed

1 minute read

A face that is fresh in the morning and shiny by afternoon is mostly oil glands plus heat, and it often gets worse when the morning wash is too harsh. Wash gently, use a niacinamide serum to calm oil, a light moisturiser, and a matte sunscreen. In the afternoon, blot with tissue or blotting paper instead of washing again. Washing more often makes skin produce more oil to replace what it lost.

Why the shine comes back by afternoon

Oil glands keep producing through the day, and heat makes oil spread and show. A harsh foaming wash in the morning strips the surface, skin feels tight, and many people skip moisturiser because they are oily — both make the afternoon shine worse.

The morning routine that lasts

Gentle wash, a niacinamide serum on damp skin, a thin layer of light moisturiser, then a matte sunscreen. Let each layer settle for a minute so the sunscreen does not slide.
