Skincare routine for dry skin in Pakistan: what to change first
Dry skin in Pakistan is seasonal for most people and permanent for some. An Islamabad or Peshawar winter drops indoor humidity far enough that skin loses water faster than it can replace it, and the standard response — a hotter shower and a stronger face wash — makes it worse. The routine below is built around barrier lipids rather than more moisture, because dry skin is usually a leak, not a shortage.
See the matching concern routineThe morning routine, in order
Rinse or cleanse gently, apply a hydrating serum to damp skin, seal immediately with a ceramide moisturiser, then sunscreen. On very dry mornings the cleanse can be water only — nothing is gained by washing skin that was cleaned eight hours ago.
The timing detail that matters is the word damp. Humectants pull water from wherever it is available, so applied to a dry face in dry air they pull it out of the skin. Applied within a minute of washing, they pull from the water still on the surface.
The night routine, in order
Cleanse, hydrating serum, moisturiser. That is the whole routine. Add a retinol night cream two to three nights a week only once the barrier is comfortable — on cracked or stinging skin, retinol is the wrong first move.
Dry skin frequently arrives at retinol before it has a working barrier, then concludes retinol does not suit it. Four weeks of a stable barrier first changes the result more than any change of retinol strength.
The cleanser is the change that matters most
If your face feels tight after washing, the cleanser is stripping lipids you need. A high-foam sulphate wash removes surface oil and barrier lipids indiscriminately, and on dry skin those lipids are already in short supply.
This single change does more for dry skin than any moisturiser upgrade. Skin should feel clean and comfortable after washing, not squeaky. Squeaky is the sound of a damaged barrier.
Ceramides are what dry skin is actually missing
Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are the mortar between skin cells. Dry skin usually has too little of them, which is why water escapes. A moisturiser with ceramides NP and EOP replaces the mortar rather than just adding water on top.
Glycerin and hyaluronic acid hold water; ceramides stop it leaving. Both are needed, and a product containing only humectants will feel excellent for an hour and change nothing by evening, particularly in a dry northern winter.
Hot water and hard water
Hot showers strip lipids faster than any cleanser. Much of Pakistan also has hard water, whose calcium and magnesium leave a residue that raises skin pH and irritates a dry barrier.
Wash your face with lukewarm water at the basin rather than under a hot shower, and keep face washing to twice daily. If your skin is markedly worse in one house than another, hard water is the usual explanation.
Winter and summer need different weights
The same skin may need a rich cream in January and a light lotion in July. Adjust the weight of the moisturiser with the season instead of concluding that a product stopped working.
In a northern winter you can also apply moisturiser twice in the evening — once immediately after cleansing and again before sleeping — which costs nothing and is more effective than buying a heavier product.
What this routine costs
Hydrating Moisturiser Rs. 1,249 for 120 ml with 5% niacinamide, 1% hyaluronic acid, ceramides NP and EOP and aloe. Hydra Glow Serum Rs. 1,149 for 30 ml adds hydration under it. Brightening Face Wash is Rs. 849, though on very dry skin start it once daily in the evening.
For dry skin the moisturiser is the non-negotiable purchase and the serum is optional. If you buy one product, buy the one with ceramides in it.
When dry skin is not dry skin
Persistent flaking with redness, itching or scaly patches at the hairline and eyebrows is more likely eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis than dryness. Those need a doctor, not a better moisturiser.
Apply a small amount to a discreet area of the jawline once daily for 2–3 days. Stop if persistent redness, itching or irritation occurs.
