Skincare routine for beginners in Pakistan: three steps, in this order

A beginner routine is three steps: cleanse, moisturise, protect. That is not a simplified version of a real routine — for most people it is the whole thing, and adding a fourth product before those three are habitual is the most common way beginners waste money here. This page sets out the three steps, what they cost, which popular steps are safe to skip, and the order to add actives in once you are ready.

The three steps

Cleanse morning and night with a gentle face wash. Moisturise immediately after, on slightly damp skin. Apply sunscreen every morning. Nothing else is required for skin to be healthy.

Written out it looks too simple to matter, which is exactly why it gets skipped in favour of a ten-step routine that lasts two weeks. Three steps done for a year beats ten steps done for a fortnight, and it is not a close comparison.

Buy in this order

Moisturiser first, then sunscreen, then cleanser, then — months later — one active serum. If you can only buy one product this month, buy the moisturiser.

A moisturiser works the day you use it. A serum works over months of repeat use. Beginners usually reverse this, buy a vitamin C serum first, apply it to a stripped barrier and conclude their skin is sensitive.

What you can safely skip

Toner, essence, face mist, sheet masks, scrubs, eye cream and every device. None of them is harmful in itself, and none of them changes the outcome of a routine that already has the three steps.

Scrubs are the only one worth actively avoiding at the start. Physical scrubs with large particles cause micro-tears and irritation on skin that has never been exfoliated, and the smoothness they produce lasts a day.

How to find your skin type in a week

Wash with a gentle cleanser, apply nothing, and look at your face after two hours. Shiny all over is oily; tight or flaky is dry; shiny nose and forehead with dry cheeks is combination; red and stinging is sensitive rather than a type.

Do this on two or three ordinary days rather than one, and not in the week you have been trying a new product. Skin type in Pakistan also shifts with season — the same person can read combination in July and dry in January, and that is normal.

Adding your first active

Wait four to six weeks. Then add one active only — niacinamide is the safest useful starting point, vitamin C next, retinol last. Add one product at a time and give each four weeks before adding another.

The reason for one at a time is diagnostic, not cautious. If you add three products and your skin reacts, you have no idea which one caused it and usually stop all three, including the two that were working.

The mistakes that cost beginners the most

Buying a full routine at once, switching products every two weeks, using a fairness or medicated cream, over-washing, skipping sunscreen, and applying products to bone-dry skin.

Unlabelled fairness and medicated creams deserve a separate warning because they are cheap, common and effective for about a week. Many contain steroids, hydroquinone or mercury, and the damage — thinned skin, visible capillaries, rebound pigmentation — outlasts the results by years.

What a beginner routine costs

Brightening Face Wash Rs. 849 for 100 ml and Hydrating Moisturiser Rs. 1,249 for 120 ml is Rs. 2,098, or Rs. 1,678 as the Glow & Hydrate Duo. Both last roughly three months. Add a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher from any trusted brand.

New to a glycolic cleanser, start it once daily in the evening and use water in the morning for the first two weeks. That is the same advice we give experienced users starting any acid — the difference is only how quickly you build up.

Patch testing, which beginners should actually do

Every new product goes on a small patch of jawline first. It costs three days and prevents the one bad reaction that puts people off skincare for years.

Apply a small amount to a discreet area of the jawline once daily for 2–3 days. Stop if persistent redness, itching or irritation occurs.

FAQs

A gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and a sunscreen. Around Rs. 2,100 for the first two, and each lasts about three months. Add an active serum only after four to six weeks.
